There are a handful of legends regarding Saint Valentine but the most known story and the one most appealing on Valentines day is the legend telling of the priest Saint Valentine who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
Now a days the retail price of flowers and chocolate near double and the majority of people share in loneliness and envy, that is all Valentines day has to offer. A sad change, but I love flowers none the less.
I personally have had a valentine almost every year of my life. As a child my parents were my valentines, then in elementary school every other child in my class was, and once I hit puberty it wasn't too hard to have someone show me some kind pathetic heart shaped pink something on societys binge day. This year... I have a valentine that I have unfortunately lost, and a secret that makes my heart flutter.
Maybe someday. <3 |
